Why Philosophy?

Students, who enjoy demolishing and constructing arguments on the pros and cons of general issues, like subjects such as mathematics and enjoy puzzle-solving of different kinds, may find that philosophy is the right subject for them. The philosophy subject incorporates a number of interesting areas. The University of Cambridge is one of the best places to study philosophy. Cambridge has given some of the most prominent philosophers of the twentieth century.

Philosophy aims at considering problems that are very general such as the purpose of human existence, the nature of reality, the foundations of value and the basis of knowledge. It also examines and assesses the methods, which are used to answer the questions.

Why Cambridge?

Ludwig Wittgenstein, G E Moore and Bertrand Russell these three Cambridge intellectuals transformed the disciplines of philosophy and made Cambridge the very important place for philosophy in the world. With the help of Frank Ramsey and others, they expanded the analytical style of philosophy that is now well-known throughout much of the world and it continues to prosper in Cambridge.

Most probably, Cambridge is the only place where students get grounding in analytical philosophy. One of the reasons is that Cambridge offers few courses wherein it is possible for students to concentrate completely on philosophy without taking any other subject.

About the Course

The course in philosophy is divided into three parts. Students are taught keeping in mind the fact that many students take the course for the first time. The course is modified and tailored to impart quality education in philosophy. Students are taught through various teaching methods. There are special classes for some subjects such as Logic. The faculty organizes weekly supervisions in college for which students are given a list of recommended books on a topic. Subsequently, they are asked to write a considerable essay based on it. After completing the essay, students discuss the topic and essay with their supervisor.

The department lays emphasis upon philosophy in the analytic tradition throughout the three years. It means students are encouraged to read the work of analytical and modern philosophers and think of philosophical topics. However, the course in philosophy is confined to the problems that have captivated analytical philosophers. The students are taught the history of philosophy from Plato to Wittgenstein at many levels. The course comprises papers on modern and medieval philosophers outside the analytical tradition. Students may also study such subjects as political philosophy and aesthetics.

In the part first 'A', the faculty aims to enhance students' ability to defend and articulate their treatment of philosophical issues. Students are encouraged throughout their studies to approach topics in their way, for example, the faculty organizes daily discussion groups for first and second year students.

Part second lectures involve new positions than simply exploring the present state of the debate. The part second subjects frequently take the form of seminar discussions. The objective of the course is to provide students with thorough understanding of contemporary debates in various areas. It also aims to accustom students with the concepts employed in present philosophy.

The philosophy faculty has close association with concerned departments such as history, classics and history and philosophy of science. Students may take an advantage of a broad range of specialized seminars and lectures. They have access to many exceptional libraries.
