Somerville College, Oxford

Somerville College admits men and women. The college was established as Somerville Hall in 1879 with the purpose of providing an opportunity for women who had little access to higher education at that time. Somerville has been admitting men as well as women since 1993.

The college welcomes graduate students in a broad range of disciplines. Somerville is a relaxed and friendly college with students from various cultural and social backgrounds. Margery Fry House is the social centre of graduate life at the college. The college has a Middle Common Room, which organizes various social activities throughout the year.

Somerville takes pride in its academic excellence and social and intellectual openness. Its alumni have gone on to excellent careers in all walks of life. They may include doctors, teachers, scholars, lawyers, well-known media personalities and journalist, successful entrepreneurs, two prime ministers, cabinet ministers, novelists, leading scientists and presently five members of parliament.

Facilities for Students with Disabilities

Somerville College offers various facilities for students with disabilities. The college provides wheelchairs to such students. Bedrooms in Margery Fry House are not apt for wheelchair users; however, many college areas are accessible for them. Students with disabilities must contact the Domestic Bursar to discuss their requirements.
