Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford - Course Outline

Weekly Timetable

The coursework is divided between classes and tutorials (generally two tutorials or one tutorial and one class a week) lectures (six to eight per week) and private study mostly spent creating essays for classes and tutorials.

First Year


All branches of PPE are studied equally


  • Moral philosophy
  • General philosophy
  • Elementary logic


  • Analysis of democratic institutions in the
  • Theorizing the democratic state
  • France, United Kingdom, Germany and the United States


  • Microeconomics: the functioning of the market economy
  • Macroeconomics: coping with national output and employment, policy issues and exchange rates
  • Mathematical techniques used in economics


First university exams
Three written papers

Second and Third Year

Compulsory core subjects:

Students may choose to continue with all three branches or concentrate on any two taking compulsory courses in the selected branches along with optional courses:

Compulsory core courses:

  • Philosophy: Ethics and either Plato's Republic or History of Philosophy from Descartes to Kant, or Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics
  • Politics (any two of these): British Politics and Government since 1900, Comparative Government, Theory of Politics, Political Sociology and International Relations
  • Economics: Quantitative Economics and Microeconomics Macroeconomics

Optional Courses:

  • More than fifty choices, including: Later Wittgenstein, Post-Kantian Philosophy, Politics in Sub-Saharan Africa, Political thought: International Economics, Plato to Rousseau, Economics of Developing Countries


Final University exams
Eight written papers and one of which may be replaced by a thesis
