Modern Languages and Linguistics at Oxford - Course Outline

A Weekly Timetable

The course work will comprise a tutorial on literature or linguistics or arranged by students' college, language and linguistics classes on different skills are associated to the language or languages they study and approximately six lectures.

First Year

Courses

Modern Language:

  • Same as for Modern Languages

Linguistics:

  • Phonetics and phonology
  • General linguistics (historical and synchronic)
  • Grammatical analysis

Assessment

First University exams
Seven written papers, comprising translation and literature

Second and Fourth Years

Courses

Modern Language:

  • Same as for Modern Languages

Linguistics:

  • General linguistics
  • Structure and use of that language in its modern form
  • History of the language students will be studying
  • One or two specialist options, for instance: semantics, syntax, sociolinguistics or psycholinguistics, phonetics and phonology

Assessment

Final University exams
Ten papers are taken

Written Work

Students need to submit written work on the prescribed date by Oxford. In addition, if students are studying an A-level or other qualification including linguistic analysis, then they also send in a piece of written work from that.

Written Test

Candidates should take the Linguistic Aptitude Test on the prescribed date. During the interview period at Oxford in December, there will be a thirty-minute test for the language they intend to study.
