History and Modern Languages at Oxford

It is recommended for students to have History to A-level, Higher Level or Advanced Higher in the IB or any academic equivalent. The language requirements are given below.

For German, French, Russian or Spanish

Candidates would typically be expected to have the language to A-level, Higher Level or Advanced Higher in the IB or any other academic equivalent.

For Czech, Celtic or Modern Greek

Candidates do not need to have any experience of studying this language and can study it from scratch.

For Italian

Candidates can apply without any formal qualification in Italian; however, successful candidates would be expected to work on their Italian before commencing the course at Oxford. Beginners are not expected to achieve A-level standard by the time they begin the course but must aim to obtain sufficient vocabulary and grammar to be able to read modern literary Italian texts.

For Portuguese

Some of the candidates may apply as complete beginners. Non-beginners can apply without any formal qualifications in Portuguese. The successful candidates will be expected to work on their Portuguese beginning the course at Oxford to attain the basic knowledge of Portuguese vocabulary and grammar.
