Natural Sciences Parts II & III (Years 3 & 4)

In the third year of part second, students may desire to retain an extensive study of science or concentrate on a single subject that they study to the level of current understanding. Specializing is proper if they wish to continue with the fourth year part third in Biochemistry, Astrophysics, Geological Sciences, Chemistry, History and Philosophy of Science, Physics and Materials Science.
Some of the part second, third year, subjects have limited space and minimum standards are set for entry to all part third programmes. All these levels students shall be studying their subject. Students have a good opportunity to read research papers which is published by experts in the field from across the world. These research papers incorporate theories and facts. These papers help students to get thorough understanding of the subject.
Students must need to attend all lectures in the part second and part third because groups are smaller the atmosphere is more intimate then in past years. Most of the students identify with their selected departments. The members of staff deliver the lectures. This staff is actively researching the topics. The department also invites experts from neighbouring research institutes or from outside Cambridge.
The department gives due importance to self-directed learning. Students are given an extensive opportunity to obtain highly specialized knowledge and considerable research experience. Students are also given practical exercises. These exercises are designed with the purpose of providing them hands-on experience. Students are given ample opportunity to explore their talent. Students are provided the practical work that is open-ended and exploratory.
A broad range of choice is offered so that students may follow up lines of work wherein they are mainly interested. Some of the students perform a significant research project that is evaluated as part of their final examination. The science departments are well equipped with all facilities. The departments incorporate state-of-the art technology, laboratories and computer facilities. Some of the academic staffs are leading their respective fields.
