Electrical & Electronic Engineering at Imperial College London

Imperial College London offers an undergraduate course in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The programme offers an excellent understanding of all the major areas of the subject with an opportunity to specialize in particular subjects in their later years.

Student on these programmes may study core modules in the first and second year including a broad range of subjects such as Software Engineering, Analogue Electronics, Mathematics, Control Engineering and Digital Electronics. In the third year, students on the BEng programme shall study up to eight modules and an individual project whereas students on the MEng programme shall study up to nine modules. Students who are following the programme with management shall study part of their course in the third and fourth year in the Business School. The fourth year includes a wide range of modules and an individual project. The Year Abroad students shall spend their fourth year at an institution overseas.

Course Structure

In the first two years, students shall follow a core programme. In the third and fourth years, students shall design their programme from a broad range of optional modules. Students will be taught through a combination of study group, lectures, project work and laboratory work.

First Year (all students)

Students will take part in a group to design project where they need to design and analyze the functioning of simple electronic circuits using PSPICE. They will investigate an electronic toy and simulate it in PSPICE to enhance and improve toy. Students shall develop an understanding of electronic circuit design. The project also introduces students to group collaboration, applying and understanding new information, time management and PSPICE design choices.

Third Year

BEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering (H600)

Student should take at least seven and maximum of eight modules that ought to include a non-technical module. Students also undertake an individual project that contributes thirty-five percent to the year total.

MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering (H604) MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering with a Year Abroad (H601) Students take at least eight and a maximum of nine modules that should include a non-technical module.

MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Management (H6N2) Students must take a minimum of eight and a maximum of nine modules that consists of three core business courses.

Coursework

Third year courses have evaluated coursework that is designed to support the lecture modules.

MEng Project

MEng students do a team design and create project. They design, test and implement a pre-production prototype product. Recent projects included developing a killer app' for designing a domestic energy manager and a mobile phone.

Fourth Year - MEng

MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering with a Year Abroad (H601)

The final year of this study consists of a substantial technical project, lecture courses and a socio-economic study. This is undertaken in a renowned university in France, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, the USA, Switzerland, Sweden and Spain.

MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering (H604) and MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Management (H6N2)

The fourth year includes a broad range of advanced technical modules. A considerable individual project is undertaken and project work starts in the first term and continues throughout the year.

Technical Modules

Students select their programme in consultation with their personal tutor. The modules come under seven categories allowing students to take a broad programme or specialize. There are eighteen modules on offer in the third year and forty in fourth years, when students shall be taught with the MSc students. The following are programme categories.

Business Modules

  • Innovation Management

Students can also take optional modules in Business Strategy, Organizational Behaviour and International Business.

Non-technical Modules

Humanities and language modules are taught by the Department of Humanities. Some of the modules are offered that may be taken in the second year. It must be noted that the list of options is subject to modification from year to year.

The current list includes:

  • Humanities - Global History of twentieth Century Things, Music, Philosophy and Western Civilization, Communicating Science, Politics, European History, Politics, Philosophies of Science, History of Medicine, Creative Writing, Controversies, Music Technology and Ethical Dilemmas in Science and Technology

If students are not on the Management Stream, then they can take modules from Imperial College Business School in Finance, Accounting, Project Management and Innovation Management.
