Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London

Imperial College London offers an undergraduate course in Chemical Engineering. In this course, some of the students have an excellent opportunity to undertake an industrial placement as part of their programme of study.

In the first two years, students shall study mathematics and basic science and how they apply to practical engineering problems. During this time, students shall analyze various chemical processes and learn about many ways of reacting, contacting and separating different liquids, gases and solids on a large scale. In the first two years, students will be introduced to economic, basic social and environmental factors, which affect industrial operations. In the first two years, students will study subjects such as mathematics, basic principles of chemical engineering, thermodynamics and business for engineers.

In the third and four year, some specialized subjects are introduced, based upon the programme of study. Subjects include, for instance, strategy of design and behaviour in industrial organizations. In the fourth year, a wide range of optional modules are available comprising subjects offered by the Business School and the Department of Humanities.

Some of the formal teaching takes place in the mornings. This may include problem classes, lectures and small group tutorials. Students need to create project including computing studies, open-ended laboratory work, investigations in the computer-controlled pilot plants and various design projects including the design of a complete process plant in the final year. Some of the students have opportunity to carry out an industrial internship following the third year. In these projects, students work in research institutes or industry during the summer vacation and continue with aspects of the work during the autumn of the fourth year.

The college also offers a stream known as 'Chemical Engineering with Fine Chemicals Processing'. It is run jointly with the Department of Chemistry. This stream was introduced with the aim of meeting the need identified in the fine formal training in process development and synthetic chemistry. It combines the core of the main chemical engineering MEng programme with special courses. These courses aim at developing knowledge and skills in the engineering, chemical and socioeconomic aspects of drug and specialty chemical production and synthesis.
