  • Monohydric Alcohols
Alcohols containing only one -OH group in the molecule are called monohydric alcohols.
  • Dihydric Alcohols
Alcohols containing two -OH groups in the molecule are called dihydric alcohols.
  • Trihydric Alcohols
Alcohols containing three -OH groups in the molecule are called trihydric alcohols.
  • Polyhydric Alcohols
Alcohols containing more than one -OH group in the molecule are called polyhydric alcohols.
  • Primary Alcohols
The alcohols in which the carbon atom attached to the -OH group is attached to none or only one alkyl group are called primary alcohols.
  • Secondary Alcohols
The alcohols in which the carbon atom attached to the -OH group is attached to two alkyl groups are called secondary alcohols.
  • Tertiary Alcohols
The alcohols in which the carbon atom attached to the -OH group is attached to three alkyl groups are called tertiary alcohols.
  • Lewis Bases
According to Lewis theory of acids and bases, the substance (molecule or ion) which can donate a lone pair of electrons is called a base.
  • Dehydration of Alcohols
The process of removal of water from an alcohol is called dehydration of alcohols.
  • Phenol or Carbolic Acid
The hydroxy derivative of benzene in which the -OH group is directly attached to the benzene ring is called phenol or carbolic acid.
  • Bromination of Phenol
The reaction in which the -H atoms of a phenol are substituted by -Br atom or Br+ ion (bromonium ion) is called the bromination of phenol.
  • Nitration of Phenol
The reaction in which the -H atoms of phenol are substituted by -NO2 group or NO2+ ion (nitronium ion) is called nitration of phenol.
  • Sulphonation of Phenol
The reaction in which the -H atoms of phenol are substituted by -SO3H group (sulphonic acid group) is called sulphonation of phenol.
