Venkatesh Chakravarty got trained in philosophy from the Madras Christian College. He completed M. Phil research degree in the philosophy of language. Venkatesh Chakravarty moved to filmmaking after a teaching stint at his alma mater. He has been associated with the film and television industry for years. He worked as a production executive in Bollywood and as an assistant director. He also worked as a scriptwriter in Malayalam and Tamil cinema. Consequently, he joined as faculty at the department of direction and screenplay writing, Film and Television Institute of Tamil Nadu.
Venkatesh Chakravarty worked for Loyola College, Madras. He was a part of course designing for first Bachelor's Degree on Visual Communication. Later on, he moved to the field of television production. He worked for high quality television programming where he edited about 90 hours length programme.
One of his outstanding works includes Hindi serial Sangharsh on the National Network of Doordharshan. He contributed for several episodes. He directed, scripted and edited for the same serials. Another major work that goes to his credit is popular serial in Tamil Paramapadham comprising of almost 150 episodes. The serial was produced by UTV, Mumbai.
Venkatesh Chakravarty worked as the chief director of multi-camera online production with V. Manikandan, famously known for Om Shanti Om fame. His seventeen episodes serial, Chitram Pesuthadi, engaged a critical analysis of famous films of Tamil telecast in the metro channel of Doordarshan. The serial received many honors from the peers of the Tamil film industry.
Venkatesh Chakravarty, due to his contribution to the entertainment industry, is widely regarded as one of the best persons associated with film industry. He earned name and fame in the realm of film venture. He also worked as the first A.D. in Kamal Hassan's stunning success Marudhanayagam. Later on, he went to Malaysia to teach the screen studies, the first postgraduate course at the Science University of Malaysia, Penang.
After coming back from Malaysia, he wrote a play Mirror, which was critically acclaimed. The play performed in various workshops and theatre festivals in many cities including Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Ahmedabad, etc. It was also performed at international level comprising UK.
Venkatesh Chakravarty produced 'Chennai: The Split City'. It is a feature length documentary film. The film was received widely. He worked for Ramanaidu Film School as well. Later on, he served as Executive Producer for an Indian English feature film. The film was written and directed by Chetan Shah of Raw Films who was a professor at Mindscreen Film Institute.
More than twenty years, Venkatesh Chakravarty has been writing incessantly in English and Tamil specially on the Tamil Cinema. His essays and articles published in refereed academic journals in India and abroad in leading newspapers, magazines and periodicals in the state of Tamil Nadu.
