Sainik School, Kapurthala was inaugurated by the then Defence minister, Sh. V K Krishna Menon on 8 July, 1961. It is a residential school, providing public school education aimed at preparing students for a commission in the armed forces and for responsible positions in other walks of life.
School Campus
The school is located in the palace of the erstwhile Maharaja of Kapurthala, situated on the outskirts of Kapurthala town about 19 kms from Jalandhar city. The Punjab Govt. bought it and gave it to the school, and new buildings for hostels, mess, auditorium, gymnasium-cum-swimming, residential quarters for the staff were also constructed. The school also has a well-equipped hospital which is run under the supervision of a resident nursing sister and a visiting part-time doctor.
Pupils
The school admits boys from defence as well as civil background.
Affiliation
Scholarships are awarded by the Government of Punjab, Union Territory of Chandigarh and Ministry of Defence based on the income of the parents.
Admission
An All India Entrance Test and Interview is generally held in February at centres throughout the country. Candidates are tested in Arithmetic, Language and General Knowledge.

Sports
Games are compulsory for all boys. A student has to participate in one game or the other. School has the facilities for hockey, cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, squash, badminton and other indoor games.
Extra Curricular Activities
Productive activities are also encouraged like music, photography, batik, leather work, engraving, clay modelling, drawing and painting, graphics, wood work, metal work, printing and composing, book craft, electronics, repairs to electrical gadgets, journalism, dramatics and making of utility items like soap, detergents, candles, hair oil, fountain pen Ink etc.
