The school was founded on the fifteenth day of January 1962. It was the first fully residential school in Orissa and still is the only residential public school in the state of Orissa.
School Campus
The land and buildings of the school were provided by the State Government. The school has a beautiful campus, well-laid out with roads and buildings in excellent condition. The three storeyed building has a number of spacious class rooms, academic departments and assembly hall, well-equipped laboratories for Computer, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, a library-cum-reading room, an art and craft gallery and an administrative block for offices and stores. The school has well equipped workshops for providing work experience training. The school also has ten well planned hostels and a spacious dining hall, a shopping complex comprises of a campus Post Office, CSD canteen, a police outpost. Indian Overseas Bank has a branch inside the school campus. There are well built and furnished staff quarters for officers, academic and administrative staff and general employees.
Pupils
The institution admits boys from all types of background. The seats are reserved for Defence Category, Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe candidates.
Affiliation
The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The medium of instruction is English. Every year besides annual examination, terminal and monthly tests are conducted.
Admission
Admissions are open to Class VI and IX only. Boys seeking admission in class VI and IX are required to qualify in an entrance examination followed by medical examination and interview. Only a limited no of boys, depending on vacancy, are admitted in class IX through admission tests. A few Bhutanese boys are admitted every year in class VI only. These candidates also require to qualify in an entrance examination.
Scholarship
A large number of liberal scholarships are available from the Govt. of Orissa and Ministry of Defence. Children of serving personnel of Defence services of the rank of officer level and below are eligible for scholarships from Ministry of Defence, while children of Ex-service personnel are eligible for Ministry of Defence Scholarships on merit-cum-means basis.
Sports
Games are compulsory for all boys. Facilities are available for cricket, hockey, football, volleyball, basketball, football, gymnastics, cross-country, squash, lawn tennis and athletics. The school also provides N.C.C. training, which is compulsory for all boys from Class VII to XII.
Extra Curricular Activities
The school provides opportunities for the development of creative faculties of students with adequate facilities for hobbies like photography, fine art, stone carving, science club, music, dramatics, band, aero-modeling, ship-modeling, gymnastics and body building. Inter-house competitions are organized in debates, quiz, extempore speech, dramatics, essay writing, art and craft. Tours, excursions and picnics are also organized. Students are also sponsored for adventure courses at Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling every year.
